When you hear the word seaweed, what do you think of? For many, they immediately feel the itchy, slimy green plant that grabs at you from a lake or ocean. But did you know that if you eat it, the health benefits abound?! Here, we will go over three health benefits of this slimy algae.
Full of Vitamins
As weird of a food as it may be, seaweed is actually very rich in many different types of vitamins. One vitamin, Vitamin A, is great for improving eye health. Seaweed in the form of raw nori is also an awesome source of Vitamin C, which helps improve your immune system and strengthens joints!
A common problem people have when they decide to try vegetarianism or veganism is trying to find a source of protein that can give them the same, or at least very similar, benefits as chicken or red meat. If this is you, no need to worry because seaweed is your answer! This plant is extremely high in protein, with 20% for kelp and up to a staggering 70% in spirulina, which is another type of algae.
Since it is simply a plant, seaweed has absolutely no fat content whatsoever. That being said, it is a great edition to any diet. There are many different types of seaweed, however the most common that are used in food are the brown, red, and green variations, so be on the lookout for these at the grocery store!
