What Type of Massage is Best for Me?

Are you new to bodywork? If so, you’re probably a little bit confused about the types of massage available. No need to worry! Swedish, deep tissue, and hot stone massages will each provide you with release and relaxation. However, each style has their own benefits and advantages, so let’s dive in and see which type of massage is best for you and your body.

Swedish Relaxation Massage

We’ll start here with the basics! Swedish massage is the most popular form of massage available in the United States. Swedish massage uses long strokes with the hands or forearms to loosen muscles and enhance circulation. This type of massage focuses on the superficial layers of the muscles as opposed to deep tissue massage, so it’s a more relaxing experience for someone new to massage.

Just because Swedish massage isn’t as intense as deep tissue, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have therapeutic properties! Benefits of Swedish massage include pain relief, lymphatic drainage, and may even have a positive effect on mental illness such as depression and anxiety.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a more therapeutic type of massage compared to the gentler Swedish massage. Deep tissue massage uses more pressure to reach deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to release tight knots and adhesions that can cause pain or lack of mobility. Some people say that deep tissue massage is painful, but a good massage therapist will work with you to make sure that you’re comfortable and relaxed while still receiving the benefit of working those deep layers of muscle.

Deep tissue massage is recommended for those with chronic pain or specific injuries that they are trying to work through. Some of the issues that can be treated with deep tissue massage are whiplash, sciatica, tennis elbow, osteoarthritis pain, and general muscle tension.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massage is many people’s choice for the most relaxing bodywork session! In hot stone massage, smooth, hot stones are placed on the back at certain points on the body. The thought is that heat is transferred to the muscles from the stones and the added weight of the stones allows the therapist to apply more pressure to an area without discomfort. Swedish massage techniques are also used during the massage session, adding to the relaxation.

Because of the relaxing nature of hot stone massage, try one if you need an extra dose of muscle relaxation, a good night’s sleep, or a boost to your immune system!
